Virtual Mentoring Opportunities – Spring 2020

Resources for virtual meeting during school closures due to COVID-19.

This is an unprecedented time for our schools, our state and our country as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  At our IAAE Exectuive and Advisory Zoom meeting this past Saturday, a discussion was held on how each of our fine arts professional organizations are assisting teachers and students during the school closures across our state. Great things are being done across the state.

To assist the young teachers in Iowa, it was approved that IAAE provide for “virtual” mentor visits.  These visits can take place using phone calls, Zoom, Google Hangout, Skype, Facetime Go to Meeting.  These “virtual” visits will be addition to normal on-site mentor visits and will be compensated at a rate of $25 per hour.  This is one way that IAAE can be responsive to the needs of our young professionals during this extraordinary time. Further information concerning the implementation of this program is included below.

If you have any questions, please contact us and we will assist you.  IAAE would like to thank all the member organizations for their support of IAAE and the IAAE mentoring program.  We will get through this together.

How do I get started?

First, have an email conversation about your goal for the virtual video session. Need suggestions for discussion? Check out the IAAE webinars as a point of topic or content to discuss.

Possible ideas:
Lesson Planning for next year
Reflections on the year to date
Is there a book you would share for inspiration?

1. Test out an online platform to meet.

There are many different apps available to use for connecting virtually via video. Pick one that you will be most comfortable with and allows you to easily connect. (These listed below are just suggestions.) Of course, the phone is the easiest connection we have, but it may not be suited to the what you want to discuss or accomplish.

This is what many educators use, AEA has support for this. IAAE uses this for our webinars.

Google Hangouts

2. When you have completed your meeting make sure you complete the IAAE Reimbursement Invoice for virtual mentor visits.
